Ringing in the New Year of Papermaking

Until towards the end of the Meiji era, each papermaker would carry out their own event for starting a new year of papermaking. Now, in passing down and preserving these events, the washi industry and traditional craft practitioners all gather together and pray for the success of the paper business in the new year.

Echizen Washi, having 1500 years in history, continues to build the status of traditional industries while supporting Japanese traditional culture. But to successfully approach the new year, we like to freshly aim the mind at further development. For this, we hold a gathering for a New Year festival along with a starting of the new year of papermaking ceremony.
